I’ve been an avid fan of Barbara Winter, author of Joyfully Jobless, since I was introduced to her blog over 2 years ago. She writes the most encouraging & sensible monthly emails – she is someone who inspires me, especially since I’ve chosen for over 3 years now not to have a boss (apart from me, that is!).

In her recent email, she wrote about how we often fear change, thinking that what we are leaving behind will make us a lesser person. Or that the change we’re embarking is too terrifying to actually start. And the quote she included to illustrate that that’s not true, is just wonderful!

“There’s a trick to the Graceful Exit, I suspect. It begins with the vision to recognize when a job, a life stage, a relationship is over and to let it go. It means leaving what’s over without denying its validity or its past importance in our lives. It involves a sense of the future, a belief that every exit line is an entry, we are moving on rather than out .  It’s hard to learn that we don’t leave the best parts of ourselves behind, back in the dugout or the Capital or the office. We own what we learned back there, the experience and the growth are grafted onto our lives. And when we exit, we can take ourselves along. Quite gracefully.”

I’ve just been on an amazing weekend seminar here in the UK, called “The isa Experience” (http://www.isaexperience.com/). It helped me begin to see that I truly have SO many choices in my life, and that many things I have learned – habitual “how to’s” and ways of thinking – just don’t benefit me any more.

The over-riding theme behind The Experience is that we can consciously decide to be happy, without that happiness being impacted by events and people over which we have absolutely no control.

And that doesn’t mean being unthinkingly happy (i.e. with a smile plastered in your face, regardless) but being consciously happy… as this video also explains:

I’ll write more about The Experience soon, but I do hope this video provokes some interesting ideas in the meantime.

Some of us get to the stage in life where we need to find out what it is that we’re on this planet for, or what the purpose or meaning of our life is. I have been heading towards that point for a couple of years, and I think it has now hit me: I need to really find out what it is that gives me joy. What is it that makes me leap up each morning and love the day? What is it that will keep me going when times are tough or uncertain, and my path may not seem too clear?

I have been reading the book Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, a WWII concentration camp survivor. It’s rare for me to make notes in a book, but this one compelled me to – there were some very deep thoughts to go back to.

“It is spiritual freedom – which cannot be taken away – that makes life meaningful and purposeful”

and

He who knows the “why” for his existence, will be able to bear almost any “how”

What amazed me were the stories of how people survived the most horrendous experiences – because they had something to live for… even if that “something” was only in their mind! It’s proof, if proof is indeed needed, of the power of positive thoughts in our lives.
